Born and bred in Hamilton, Darnell completed his Bachelor of Dental Surgery at the University of Otago in 1999 and went on to work at Wellington Hospital (Capital and Coast District Health Board) before heading to Auckland, and later Sydney where he worked in private practice.
While an undergraduate student Darnell discovered a passion for orthodontics, which was heightened in his years of general dentistry. So in 2004, after completing the gruelling Royal College of Dental Surgeons Fellowship examinations, Darnell packed his bags and returned to the deep south to embark on the University of Otago’s Master of Dental Surgery (Orthodontics) programme.
Darnell graduated with a Master of Dental Surgery (Orthodontics) and also sat and gained the prestigious examinations for Membership to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is also a registered member of the New Zealand Association of Orthodontists and a member of the European Orthodontic Society.
Darnell joined Courtenay Orthodontics in 2007 working alongside incumbent orthodontist Michael S. Taylor, and went on to buy the company off Michael.
Outside of orthodontics Darnell is married with two young children (who keep him entertained…and exhausted in equal measure). He enjoys skiing, martial arts, film, and, when he has time, composing songs on his beloved Martin guitar.
